The RD Group is a privately held organization with its headquarters in Mumbai, India. The company was founded in 1954 by three enterprising brothers from the first generation of the Ghera family, Ramchand, Shewaram and Makumal. The first stepping-stone was laid after buying a retail store in the name of “R. Damomal”, in the center of the city at “Mohatta Market” which was very famously known for its exclusive shopping arcade in 1950’s. The retail store catered to the elite clientele of Mumbai and especially to very glamorous celebrities. After establishing itself as a quality store for its unique designs and beautiful hand embroidered work within Mumbai, the store headed for its expansion throughout the country. It started selling the goods in wholesale to other cities within India. Soon, due to its innovative creations, “RD” became the name famous for its beautifully designed bridal sarees.

Then, in 1963, a small store was opened in the name of “M/ Shewaram”, in ‘Kalbadevi’, the wholesale area of Mumbai, which catered to the wholesale needed of Indian garments. On 25th October 1974, a mega store with an area of 1500 square feet was opened in the name of “ R.D. Zari Emporium” (zari here stands for bullion used for embroidery).
In addition to the regular Indian garments, the Arab variety of the work was also added, such as the heavily embroidered fabric Fustans and Kaftans gowns. This was done with a view to meet the needs of Indian embroidery to the Arab visitors for their personal as well as for their business needs. Over the years, the second generation of the family entered the business from the early eighties. Mr.Panjabi started travelling to gulf countries like Dubai and Saudi Arabia and started visiting clients in Jeddah and Riyadh for high fashion embroidered fabrics. Mr. Lallit Ghera went to New York in July, 1987 and began his study of the market importance of Indian hand embroidery in the United States. Manhattan’s Seventh Avenue, famous for it’s designers inspired Lallit to start his own company, ‘Mystic Beading’ and ‘RSM Designs Inc’ at Broadway, Manhattan

The client list in New York includes highly esteemed names in the fashion industry such as: MARIA SNYDER LACE STAR SPOSA BELLA JMC MARISSA In 1990, an export company was registered in the name of ‘R.Damomal Exports’. The initial exports included chiffon sarees to Mauritius and silk fabrics to South Africa and Saudi Arabia. In early 1995, Mr. Vasshu Gherra explored a new market in EUROPE mainly Italy and France and soon started traveling frequently to Italy, mainly Milan, which is called the Mecca of high fashion and also to Rome.

The company boasts of clients such as SARLI, ROCCO BOROCCO, LANCETTI, to name a few in ROME and MILA SCHON in MILAN ALSO TORRENTE IN FRANCE.

After achieving success in Europe and USA, the company felt a need for in house manufacturing unit, which was taken care of by moving from the store unit to a large industrial unit. First, a mere 10-15 skilled workers were employed on trial basis, then the success of in house quality gave way to set up a large factory of 2200 sq. ft. compromising a worker strength of 100 workers and office area of 1550 sq. ft.
This move gave the group a new horizon to touch with specialized people coming in. Alongwith this, a new company 'Vivsur Exports Pvt Ltd' was launched. Today, the RD Group heading towards wider markets and scaling new heights.
